Short answer: a solid everyday machine lands around $900 to $1,300, a serious gaming rig $1,800 to $2,800, and a workstation depends entirely on what you throw at it. Here's where that money actually goes.

Where the budget goes

Roughly half your spend sits in two parts: the graphics card and the processor. The rest, meaning the board, memory, storage, power supply and case, is where smart choices save real money without any performance you would notice.

The part most people overspend on

Motherboards. A $450 board and a $180 board run the same CPU at the same speed for most users. Unless you're overclocking hard or need specific I/O, the extra $270 does nothing. Put it toward the graphics card instead.

When prebuilt genuinely wins

Sales events. Big retailers move prebuilts below parts cost to clear stock, and during those windows a prebuilt can beat a custom build on price. The trade off is usually a weak power supply and a budget board, which is fine for office work but worth upgrading for gaming.
